Mortal Wombat banned in Australia

28 Feb

Actually, it’s the latest version of Mortal Kombat that’s banned, but I always called Mortal Kombat Mortal Wombat.

Maybe that’s the problem. Maybe I’m responsible. Maybe the Aussies peeked out from betwixt the corks on their hats and saw me chatting about Mortal Wombat when I was about 11. Confused, they made a note to follow this up later and have now done so, 20 years on.

Whatever the reason, I’m frankly astonished that I can still go on a computer game website in 2011 and see a headline like ‘Mortal Kombat banned’. I remember when the videogame industry moved on apace, but clearly not one thing has happened in two decades. It’s dispiriting.

Civilisation V is not shit

Oh God. This is really worrying. I think I might want to play it, but it’ll suck the time out of my life as comprehensively as a Bangkok hooker sucks a rich American’s private parts.

Civ V seems the same, but looks less shit. It’s weaponry, science and taxes. It’s granaries and wonders of the world. It’s irrigation and mining.

And now you choose social policy. And combat’s more complex. Someone somewhere said it was more fun.

Even more worryingly, it is said that Civ IV is more complex than Civ V. I pretty much associate complexity with quality, so might have to do some sort of comparison. This would proably constitute a lifetime’s undertaking.

There’s a Civilisation V?

Shit, I still haven’t got round to playing Civilisation II (Note the spelling of ‘Civilisation’ with an S. The game isn’t called that, but that’s the correct spelling.)

My mate had to snap his Civilisation II CD because it was damaging his life. I played through Civilisation I more times than I care to remember and I still didn’t work everything out. And now there’s a Civilisation V? Jesus.

I’ve discovered this through finding a news article about a Polynesia upgrade pack. If any expansion pack ever answered questions about the complexity of  a game simply through its name, this is that occasion.
